Intro to Wood Shop: Build a Coat Rack

This class will cover the use of more than five tools for beginner makers. In this class you will learn to make a wall-mounted coat rack while using some of the more “intimidating” tools in the wood shop, like the table saw or the miter saw, as well as techniques like “splitting the difference”
Or “burning the one.”
On top of all this knowledge you’ll have a coat rack to take home with you at the end of the class.
Skills Covered / Outcomes:
- Learn to properly read a tape measure.
- Learn to safely use tools.
- Basic machine use.
- A better understanding and respect of the wood shop.
- A wall mounted coat rack to take home.
What to bring:
Bring a pencil (no pens), your preferred tape measure if you have one, and appropriate shop clothing (nothing baggy or dangly).
Materials Included:
- ¾” x 5” poplar.
- 12 ¾” (+) length of dowel.
- Titebond 3.
- Wall hangers (D-rings).
- The material fee is included in the registration fee.
Minimum Participant Age: 15
Instructor Bio:
Caige Hirsch is a woodworker / set designer currently living in Santa Cruz. Coming from a family of woodworkers and being the son of a master wood turner, he was pretty much raised in a wood shop. He’s made his rounds in professional cabinet shops, production wood turning shops, shutter shops and set design companies. He’s young but has the skillset to teach you the basics of woodworking!
