Introduction to Creative Programming with Processing

In this class, you will start fresh, and learn enough to program animated shapes and patterns on your computer screen. We will use a language called “Processing”, but everything you learn will apply to any kind of programming. Express yourself in coded pixels!
Skills Covered / Outcomes:
When you’re done, you’ll understand the basic programming and coding techniques that, well, much of our world is built on.
- What is a computer language?
- What is a computer program?
- Are computers based on numbers? (Yes, but it’s not scary.)
- How do computers draw on the screen?
- How does animation work?
- How to describe a simple picture to be drawn with computer code
- How colors work on a screen and why Red, Green, and Blue is enough to make lots of colors
- How and why we see animation
What to bring:
Your own laptop and power supply.
Prerequisites:
You need to be comfortable using your laptop computer, and installing a downloaded application (“Processing”).
Age Requirements:
Any age (if young, at parents’ discretion)
Instructor Bio:
In 1978, David Van Brink wrote little graphics toys on an Apple II. Since then he’s gotten advanced degrees in computer science, helped invent QuickTime, gotten a few patents for electronics design software. Now he spends time helping others write little graphics toys on… modern computers.
